The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington (ACLU-WA) is seeking a full-time Organizer, based in Spokane, to engage and coordinate with socially and politically diverse advocacy organizations on shared policy priorities and goals in state and local legislative advocacy, electoral engagement and education, ballot initiatives and referenda, and public education efforts to promote and protect civil liberties and civil rights. The Organizer is housed within the Political Strategies Department (PSD), which works with a broad range of stakeholders across Washington State to ensure decision makers in state and local legislative and executive bodies pass laws and adopt policies that advance and defend civil liberties and civil rights. The Organizer will work on a range of issues including, but not limited to, equitable access to education and health care, reducing the size and scope of our criminal legal system and stopping the criminalization of immigration status, and preventing the rise of a surveillance state. This position is based in Spokane, and ACLU-WA will provide all the technical equipment and support to ensure success and smooth coordination with colleagues across the state. The Organizer reports to the Field Director.
ACLU-WA works closely with state and local legislators and allies to promote bills that strengthen civil liberties and oppose bills that weaken them. Our state legislative program is well respected and vigorous. We work with aligned organizational partners to inform and mobilize people throughout the state. The people in the center of the struggles for justice, who feel the impact in their daily lives, are especially important allies. We provide resources and technical assistance through meetings, trainings, the website, and an action alert system. On federal issues, we collaborate with the Washington Legislative Office (WLO) in the nation’s capital.

- Build trust and strong relationships with community leaders who do advocacy work in issue areas that frequently intersect with ACLU’s policy priorities, and grassroots organizations led by and centering the voices of directly impacted individuals and communities disproportionately impacted by violations of civil liberties and civil rights; seek their input to help shape ACLU’s priorities; facilitate connections to ACLU-WA colleagues in the Legal and Policy Departments as needed.
- Work closely with the parents of the Every Student Counts Alliance and provide support when appropriate.
- Provide logistical support and technical advice to community partners as appropriate and desired by the organizations’ leadership.
- Facilitate coalition coordination as needed.
- Work closely with colleagues across the office to support the development, coordination, and implementation of effective messages, strategies, and tactics to advance the ACLU’s commitment to cross-departmental collaboration.
- Work with coalition partners to identify community spokespeople and connect them with ACLU staffers for media and lobbying training and preparation as needed.
- Regularly update PSD teammates on developments in community and organizational relationships, priorities, and concerns, and provide officewide updates as requested by the Field Director.
- Provide Activism Manager with ally engagement and coordination support for joint grassroots mobilization efforts and statewide legislative advocacy trainings; provide onsite logistical and programmatic support as needed.
- Participate in ACLU-WA’s race equity work, which may include utilizing ACLU-WA race equity tools, adopting ACLU-WA race equity practices, serving on the Race Equity Team or subcommittees, etc.
- Commitment to race and other forms of equity, dismantling white supremacy and structural power analysis, with knowledge and understanding of how power is manifested in matters of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, ability, language, immigration status, national origin, and socio-economic circumstances, both internally in our organization and externally in the communities that we serve.
- Ideal candidates will have an awareness of, and willingness to engage in, the difficult and transformative work of challenging systems of oppression, institutional and structural racism, and implicit bias.
- Experience in community engagement and mobilization.
- An understanding of and enthusiasm for civil liberties and civil rights.
- Ability to describe ACLU issues with confidence to external allies.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, including an ability to connect with people from different backgrounds, build relationships across differences, and navigate and resolve conflict in a manner that values and respects relationships.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, and attention to detail.
- Self-motivation, with a demonstrated ability to manage projects and follow-through.
- A capacity for self-reflection.
- Ability to have courageous conversations internally with colleagues and externally with allies when overcoming differences in opinion.
- Ability to work evenings or weekends when needed.
- Willingness to travel to Western Washington when needed.
- Proficiency in a language other than English is a plus.
The ACLU-WA’s offices are located in Seattle. This position will be working remotely in Spokane. Hours are typically 9am-5pm, but there are regularly scheduled evening and weekend meetings the Organizer will attend. The physical demands and work environment described below represent those required and encountered by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The ACLU of WA is dedicated to centering equity in all aspects of the organization and, as such, has adopted a salary scale for measuring how to best compensate its employees. The salary for this position is $51,750. For purposes of calculating overtime, the hourly rate of pay is $28.43. Non-exempt employees observe a 35-hour work week with a 1-hour lunch break.
Benefits include three weeks of vacation, twelve sick days, twelve holidays, fully paid employee medical, dental, vision, and disability insurance, and a generous retirement plan.
