Washington’s Paramount Duty: Statewide Organizing Director

POSITION DESCRIPTION Washington’s Paramount Duty (WPD) is looking for someone with significant organizing experience to help organize parents and other community members throughout Washington to push the legislature to fully and equitably fund public schools with new, progressive revenue. We expect this to be a self-directed consulting role with direction from the WPD board. Contract compensation is $4000-5000 per month, depending on experience. The contract lasts through July 31, 2017.

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

• Recruit and manage volunteers, develop issue and regional committees

• Conduct outreach to parents, other education stakeholders, and community members

• Educate, train, and motivate parents and other community members to take action related to education funding

• Maintain accurate and detailed information to support building strong regional and statewide organizing

• Gather information to support legislative actions and attend hearings in Olympia

• Develop presentations, organize events, and lead conference calls

• Perform other tasks and responsibilities related to the organizing goals, as needed

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Prior experience organizing in labor, community, political or education settings is preferred

• Familiarity with the state legislative process, and education and new revenue policy, is preferred.

• Ability to effectively plan, complete tasks, and manage time, as part of a team and individually

• Ability to work remotely and to attend meetings as needed throughout Washington State, particularly in Olympia and Seattle

• Ability and willingness to be available during irregular hours as needed to successfully organize, including evenings and weekends. This is not a 9-5 gig!

• Experience and knowledge of computer programs (including word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet and database software) -- WordPress a big plus!

• Familiarity with organizing on Facebook and using Mailchimp (or a similar service).

• Self-motivated and able to work effectively within a team structure and individually

• Ability to multi-task, and prioritize work

• Ability to demonstrate good judgment
