Communications and Storytelling Trainings
Communications is key to creating social change, as well as sharing your mission and values with supporters and the general public. The communications landscape is rapidly changing and it’s easy to fall behind, especially for smaller organizations with limited staff capacity. We strive to remove those barriers through our year-round training program. We use a skills-based approach to connect progressive professionals with the latest communications tools, research, and best practices to engage and mobilize audiences.
Since we launched our training program in 2013, we’ve engaged over 3,000 advocates across the state. We provide no-cost communications trainings on a variety of topics and skills, including:
- Storytelling and narrative
- Writing LTEs and/or Op-Eds
- Developing a personal story
- Drafting a compelling speech
- Social media
- Earned media
- In-language work and translation
- Setting up an email platform
- Digital ads
- Story banking (collecting stories)
As an organization that works on a wide variety of issues across different communities, we strive to share our communications knowledge and experiences with partners. We work alongside progressive organizations to develop messaging that is evidence-based, resonates with base audiences, and is grounded in our shared values.
Our approach is grounded in an epic storytelling structure that prioritizes stories centered on people, not abstract facts and wonky statistics. In addition to helping organizations draft messaging, we can also provide staff capacity to help draft other needed communications collateral.
Communications Staffing Support
A truth of activism is that there is often more communications work than there are people to do it. Staff support is the added capacity that makes all the difference. So we engage with progressive organizations to assess capacity and offer additional staff hours. We can help community organizations launch and manage social media platforms, develop and implement an earned media strategy, draft content for emails and websites, plan a story bank strategy, and tackle other communications tasks to help an organization achieve its goals.
